Hurricane Katrina
Most of us who watched the events of Hurricane Katrina unfold, moment by moment, felt helpless to respond at the time. As many of you know, the Mission Committee sought to “connect” with relief organizations in an effort to coordinate a purposeful response. The extent of the devastation and the chaos of the aftermath, made it extremely difficult, if not impossible to put a “Mission Team” on the ground, to provide assistance that was safe and meaningful. Local, Federal and community regulations prevented many thousands of responders from doing meaningful work after their arrival. The situation has improved, but many roadblocks to recovery still exist.
During recent months, Greenwich Church has been seeking ways to assist the victims of the disaster. Early this year, we were put in contact with Dean Smith, Pastor of Freedom Christian Fellowship, Moss Point, Mississippi. Freedom Christian Fellowship is one of 190 Churches in Mississippi damaged or destroyed by flood waters or winds. Numerous phone conversations with Pastor Smith and a visit to Moss Point by Jesse and Chasity Spittle, has given Greenwich Church a “connection” to Katrina and an opportunity to respond.
Greenwich Church has donated $10,000.00 to Freedom Christian Fellowship for the purchase of an air conditioning unit that will cool a portion of the newly remodeled building. In addition, the Mission Committee has approved a donation for up to $1,000.00 for the purchase of pew bibles, youth bibles and Sunday School supplies to replace those lost in the Katrina disaster.
Please continue to pray for Freedom Christian Fellowship and the recovery efforts of the church and the surrounding community. For additional information contact Jesse Spittle at jspittle@greenwichpres.org.
