FROM: Merritt Shatz
Just got off the phone with the Governor of Virginia who is encouraging faith groups (not particular persons, but particular congregations) to call a toll free number if you can help the Hurricane relief effort in the following ways:
1. Can you provide housing for hurricane refugees?
2. How long can you provide this housing?
3. Can you lend a bus to drive to the effected area and bring refugees back to this area to be housed?
We are working in the presbytery to have a contact person for you to give this information to so that we can provide a coordinated response to Virginia’s request. We expect that Maryland may make a similar request, but for now we want to have one coordinator for the presbytery. We think we have someone who will do this, but until we can confirm this, please let Merritt Schatz (202-338-0285, schatzm@comcast.net) know what you can provide in the above requests. We wanted to get this information to you so that you can include these requests in addition to what you are already asking your congregations to do.
Also they emphasized that unless your group is connected already to a particular service point in the affected area, please do not send a team yet. Our presbytery team will not be leaving here until we are sure that we can get to our destination without being a burden upon anyone else, and that we can provide assistance not require it. The safety of persons going on the team, and the needs of the persons in the affected areas are our highest priorities. We will be sending a team and probably will do so according to the original timetable (or close to it), but will do so using good sense and good stewardship.
